Jonathan Marchessault Goes From Undrafted, Unwanted Underdog To Stanley Cup Legend for Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights as a whole embody what we love so much about sports, but no player backs up the ‘Golden Misfit’ persona more than Jonathan Marchessault.

The 32-year-old played a pivotal role in the Golden Knights Stanley Cup championship and was named the MVP of the playoffs for his efforts.

Marchessault finished tied for the postseason lead in goals and was second in total points scored. He finished the playoffs on a ten-game point streak and had scored 11 goals across his previous 13 games.

It would be reasonable for those unfamiliar with Marchessault to assume he was a highly-touted player for his whole career, but that could not be further from the truth.

The Quebec native was not even drafted coming out of junior hockey. He was an undersized player that toiled in the American Hockey League for five seasons before becoming an NHL regular at the age of 26.

Even then, after producing 30 goals for the Florida Panthers, they decided they were better off without him. They propositioned Vegas to take him during the team’s expansion draft so they could protect bottom-pair defenseman Alex Petrovic instead.

Marchessault immediately starred as one of the original members of the Golden Knights and has not looked back since.

He became one of ten undrafted players ever to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, but technically speaking, he is the first. The other players were not overlooked, they just came from eras where teams had junior protected lists, or a rival league was around.

Marchessault was an afterthought for most of his career, but he will be remembered forever now.
