JJ Redick and Kendrick Perkins Have On-Air Shouting Match Over NBA Racial Bias, False Narratives

For those who consume their sports media by watching two grown men yell at each other, yesterday was a banner day on ESPN’s ‘First Take’.

Former NBA players JJ Redick and Kendrick Perkins were at each other’s throats over a debate about the tightly-contested NBA MVP race, with the latter insinuating that there was racial bias among the voters that favored white players.

Redick did not take kindly to Perkins’ claims.

“It is an honor to be on this show everyday. It really is. But what we just witnessed is the problem with this show. Where we create narratives that do not exist in reality.”

Last week, Perkins made a point about how Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, and Nikola Jokic are the only players since 1990 to win MVP without being top-10 in scoring.

“What do those guys have in common? I’ll let it sit there and marinate. You think about it,” he said, hinting that their skin color was the reason they took home the award.

All I know: Nikola Jokic is averaging a triple-double this season playing for the top-seeded team in the Western Conference. No bias can deny that is an MVP resumé.
