A 33-year-old man created a stir when he leaped into one of the 9/11 Memorial reflecting pools, perching himself on the edge of the 20-foot deep central void described by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum as a “smaller, central void.” He gazed into the abyss, gradually inched closer, and eventually took the plunge. He was subsequently transported to Bellevue Hospital with minor leg and back injuries, and trespassing charges have not been pressed. The incident raises questions about its potential symbolism.
