Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining Operation Found Hidden in School

A municipal employee in Massachusetts is accused of setting up a cryptocurrency mining operation in a crawl space at a US high school.

Back in December 2021, police say they were first alerted to something bizarre at a school in Cohasset, Massachusetts.

The director of facilities told police that, during a routine investigation, he found “electrical wires, temporary duct work, and numerous computers that seemed out of place.”

The bizarre setup was found in a “remote crawl space under the school.”

The town’s IT director was consulted, and they came to the conclusion that it was a cryptocurrency mining operating “unlawfully attached to the school electrical system.”

Local police contacted the US Coast Guard Investigative Service and the Department of Homeland Security to receive help with removing the equipment and investigating.

After a three-month investigation, officials tapped Nadeam Nahas as a suspect. Nahas worked as a Town of Cohasset assistant facilities director but resigned in 2022.

Nahas has been accused of fraudulent use of electricity and vandalizing a school.
