Howard University Students Were Not Happy With President Joe Biden’s Commencement Speech

On May 7th, 2023, President Joe Biden delivered a commencement address to the graduating class of Howard University from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. During his speech, he emphasized the ongoing battle for the soul of the nation and highlighted the pressing issues of political extremism, white supremacy, and attacks on democracy.

President Biden also reflected on the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, stating that it was the first time in American history that an attempt was made to stop the peaceful transfer of power. However, he also stressed that the attempt ultimately failed, and he and Vice President Kamala Harris were able to take office.

Despite the significance of the president’s speech, many students were not pleased with his selection as the commencement speaker. Students expressed their discontent on social media, citing concerns about the Biden administration’s record on issues such as climate change, immigration, and racial justice. Some students argued that the university should have chosen a speaker who better reflected the values and priorities of the student body.

Before his speech, President Biden was honored with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick. Vice President Kamala Harris, a graduate of Howard University and the first female and first Black vice president, accompanied him during his inauguration and was also recognized during the ceremony.

Overall, while President Biden’s speech marked an important moment for the graduating class of Howard University, it also highlighted the ongoing tensions between the administration and young activists who are pushing for more progressive policies and greater representation in leadership.
