Golf Cart Washed Away in Dramatic Video as California Floods Continue

California has been hit by multiple whammies of massive rainstorms, leaving much of the state grappling with unprecedented flooding.

While the more significant impacts are obvious, some of the more practical impacts – such as to people’s commutes, yards, and living experiences – are often getting swept under the current of the headline makers.

One story is drawing attention to the little ways the floods are impacting people’s lives after a video went viral where a golf cart is dramatically washed away, its driver jumping to safety just in time.

FACTZ spoke exclusively with the cart’s driver, who shared his experience at Oso Creek Golf Course.

The driver said that while they have encountered water in that particular location, he described past experiences as “maybe just a splash, but that’s about it.”

Before attempting to ford the river, the driver was in contact with two-course workers who watched the driver and his group tee off at the first hole. They exchanged pleasantries with the workers and were told that “things should be fine once we get past that first part of the course.”

The driver says they could see the same thing he could – the flowing water over the sidewalk – and assumed that their statement meant it would be passable; otherwise, “they would have stopped me right there and told me not to drive through it.”

However, once the cart entered the water, the driver says it became clear that “the current had picked up and was much deeper and flowing much quicker than I had thought.”

The cart was submerged halfway through, leaving the driver to grab his clubs off the back and abandon ship as quickly as possible, wading through waist-deep floodwaters.

Once out, the driver was approached by a worker who told them to “no, just leave it there” after they offered to help get the cart out of the water. The worker promised they would be brought a new cart (after all, they paid for the riding rate, not walking), but they still hadn’t received one by the 6th hole.

At that point, a gardener told them they were closing the course and had to come back in.

Now, the driver and friends are looking to replace the cart for the Oso Creek Golf Course. Even though the company is not charging them for the cart, they believe the GoFundMe is “the right thing to do to replace it for the love of the game.”
