Georgia Governor Declares State of Emergency and Calls Up Thousands of National Guard Troops

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency on Thursday, calling up 1,000 National Guard troops to combat ongoing protests in downtown Atlanta after a shooting last week near a law enforcement training site.

During the incident, a Georgia state trooper was wounded, and another man was killed.

The shooting happened at the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, nicknamed by locals “Cop City.” Protesters have been camped out there for months. Still, on January 18, a protester (Manuel Esteban Paez Teran) was shot and killed by police after authorities claim he shot and wounded a Georgia state trooper during a planned effort to remove protesters. The trooper has recovered from his injuries.

On January 21, six people were arrested after the protests resulted in property damage and a police vehicle being set on fire. Some of the protesters police took into custody had explosives on them, according to Mayor Andre Dickens.

The state of emergency lasts until February 9, and Georgia officials are warily eyeing Memphis, Tennessee, where police are expected to release bodycam footage any minute that shows the brutal beating death of Tyre Nichols, who was killed either through direct action or inaction of five police officers.
