Firefighters Drag Elk to Safety from Frozen Pond

FACTZ caught the moment firefighters rescued a trapped elk from an icy pond.

The mammal had fallen into the freezing water after walking on the ice in Evergreen, Colorado. Passers-by saw the animal in the pond near Timbervale Drive and called emergency services on 911.

Two firemen who responded managed to pull the deer to safety amid the snow and ice. They could be seen on video struggling with the weight of the creature. A mature cow – or female elk – can weigh over 500 pounds, while males weigh 660 to 780 pounds. According to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, they can measure from five to six-and-a-half feet, nose to tail.

The elk didn’t appear injured and later walked away.
