Elon Musk Spoke Directly with Putin Before Tweeting Proposal for Peace with Ukraine

Last week, billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk waded into a global fracas, tweeting suggestions for how the war between Russia and Ukraine could end without further escalation.

Musk’s tweets suggested that Ukraine may need to commit to permanent neutrality, allow Crimea to remain part of Russia, and let the aggressors annex the regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

Now it would seem that those suggestions came straight from the horse’s mouth – Russian President Vladimir Putin himself.

In a mailout sent to Eurasia Group subscribers, Musk said that Putin was “prepared to negotiate” but only if those terms were met.

Putin told Musk that the goals would be accomplished “no matter what” and included the potential for a nuclear strike if Ukraine aggresses against Crimea.

Musk told subscribers that “everything needed to be done to avoid that outcome.”

Musk, in the past, has blustered and offered to fight Putin one on one, but it seems that he’s taking the Russian dictator’s threats seriously – and hoping to encourage the global community to do the same. In his tweets, Musk did concede that votes taken by Russian soldiers as to whether or not the four above regions wished to be annexed by Russia were “sham” referendums. He suggested that a UN-supervised vote should be redone and allow the people to decide for themselves.

Ukrainian officials did not welcome Musk’s input, with one even telling him to “fuck off.”
