If Donald Trump is indicted, it’s game over for civility in the US.
At least, according to the former POTUS (FPOTUS).
Trump spoke this week with conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt and let him know that the shit will really hit the fan if he’s indicted, and he’s probably not wrong. Trump explained, “If a thing like that happened, I would have no prohibition against running. I think if it happened, I think you’d have problems in this country the likes of which perhaps we’ve never seen before. I don’t think the people of the United States would stand for it.”
Trump did not clarify exactly what “problems” he was referring to, but this isn’t the first time the FPOTUS and other lead Republicans have hinted at civil unrest if Trump is held criminally liable.
Repub Senator Lindsey Graham suggested there would be “riots in the streets” if Trump is arrested.
While they may be right, the problem they’ve neglected to consider is that there’s already been civil unrest and an attempt at bloody overthrow – January 6, 2021. And it didn’t end so well for those who stormed the Capitol.
While the potential for civil unrest is enough to keep those paying attention up at night, it’s not a reason to avoid charging him if the Department of Justice finds him criminally liable.
Then again, he’s Teflon Don – they may find nothing but wind.
