California Bans Candy Including Skittles

Governor Gavin Newsom (D) of California signed AB 418 into law on Saturday, effectively prohibiting the sale of popular candies like Skittles within the state. The bill targets additives such as brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, and red dye 3. As of January 1, 2027, products containing any of these restricted additives cannot be manufactured, sold, delivered, distributed, held, or offered for sale in California.

In a statement released by Governor Newsom’s office following the bill’s signing, he highlighted that brands like Skittles have been able to modify their recipes in international markets by removing the banned substances.
