Attorney Steve Dimopoulos to the Raiders Over Cease and Desist: No Swoosh, No Problem

Las Vegas attorney Steve Dimopoulos of Dimopoulos Law Firm has a loud and clear message for the Las Vegas Raiders: “If the NFL wants me to give up my First Amendment rights, well, then, molon labe.”

Dimopoulos filed a complaint for declaratory relief through first-amendment attorney Marc Randazza on March 1 that his law firm did not infringe on the Las Vegas Raiders trademarks during a television commercial that began airing in February 2023.

The trouble started when the NFL sent a cease and desist letter to Dimopoulos. The dapper personal inquiry attorney known for his flashy billboards counters that he has used a silver and black color since 2012—long before the Raiders ever dreamed of coming to the desert.

“The only logo in the commercial is the law firm’s Spartan logo,” he says.

The Kings, White Sox, and Spurs all use a similar color scheme. Adding more fuel to the Raiders fire, Dimopoulos hired UFC’s Jon Jones, William Karlsson of the Vegas Golden Knights, and Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders to appear in the ad, contracting with Crosby to wear a black/white/silver jersey with his nameplate and number 98 and that no NFL, Raiders, or equipment manufacturer logos will be depicted in the commercial.

Crosby warranted the agreement with Dimopoulos did not conflict with or violate any agreements. A disclaimer also ran that the firm “is not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with the NFL.”

The cease and desist accused Dimopoulos of “engaging in the unauthorized use of” the Raiders’ marks,” even though no mark owned by the Raiders was shown. It concluded by demanding that Dimopoulos cease immediately, or else it would be subject to “heightened legal penalties.”

Further, Dimopoulos asserts there are NO marks associated with NFL gear on the jerseys.

The court of FACTZ has decided to try this one, and here is our verdict: If the swoosh isn’t on the fit, no cease and desist!
