Pay Attention: Abortion is Actually on the Ballet Here in 2022

While there’s a lot of hyperbole about how the midterm elections are “placing abortion on the ballot,” there are several states where it quite literally is on the ballot.

Six states have amendments or measures on the ballot for 2022 which will affect abortion access, and here’s what you want to know about each:

  1. Montana: Measures heading to the ballot favor abortion rights opponents. LR-131 is a legislative referendum on the Montana Born-Alive Infant Protection Act, which would establish that infants “born alive” at any stage of development are legal persons and require medical providers to give them care after induced labor, c-sections, or attempted abortions.
  2. Michigan Measures heading to the ballot favor abortion rights advocates. A “yes” vote would establish “a new individual right to reproductive freedom, including the right to make and carry out all decisions about pregnancy.”
  3. Vermont: Measures heading to the ballot favor abortion rights advocates. Article 22 would protect the right to “personal reproductive autonomy.”
  4. Kentucky: Measures heading to the ballot favor abortion rights opponents. Amendment 2 would change the state’s constitution to say that it does not “secure or protect the right to abortion.”
  5. Kansas: Measures heading to the ballot favor abortion rights opponents
  6. California: Measures heading to the ballot favor abortion rights advocates. Proposition 1 would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

The 3 to 3 spread is indicative of just how starkly the country is divided over abortion rights issues.
