Suitcase House Could be the Housing Solution of the Future

A new housing product known as Maawa X is a waterproof and solar-powered pop-up housing option.

The tent-like home structure features a fold and unfold mechanism that collapses the domicile into the size of a suitcase.

Once unfolded, the home expands to 14 times its original size and takes just 47 seconds to build (or disassemble) and can sleep two people.

The Maawa covers 3.5 cubic meters, and includes a cloud-based smarthome setup which includes GPS, panic buttons, notifications, content broadcasts and surveys.

The idea is to offer Maawa X as emergency or refugee situations, or even for homeless camps that require better housing than tents can offer.

Abdallah Al Raggad, CEO and Founder of Maawa, says of the product, “our goal is to create a dignified and secured living space by building a lean solution with a seamless user experience that can solve the challenges of portability, protection, sustainability and cost.”

The design is “optimized for flat-sheet production line,” making it quick to produce en masse.

While Maawa is not yet available for mass production, the creators expect each unit “to be sold for the price of a tent, making it affordable and ideal for rapid sheltering”.

The products are being tested at refugee camps in Jordan, and may soon expand to other parts of the world.
