52-Foot-Tall Berlin Aquarium Bursts, Spilling Debris and Fish Into the Streets

A massive cylindrical aquarium in Berlin’s Raddison Collection Hotel exploded on Friday, spilling debris, water and fish out into the streets.

The mammoth aquarium towered 52 feet in the air and had an elevator in the center which provided visitors with a 10-minute-long ascent and descent through the wonder of the aquarium seascape.

Witnesses say they heard a sound like an explosion around 5:45AM local time, when the tank burst. A wave of glass, metal and rock debris rode a wave of water through the hotel lobby and out into the streets.

Two people were injured by flying glass debris. Heartbreakingly, all 1,500 animals (fish and other aquatic creatures) in the tank are believed to have died.

Police do not believe that the incident was the result of an attack and are investigating the cause.
